Katerina Kraeupner: from the check-in counter to the cockpit

At 20, Katerina was a check-in agent at Varna Airport, in a Bulgaria where “women were for service roles, men were for the controls.” At 38, she flies IFR at an integrated pilot academy.

In between: a move to Germany alone, without the language. A rejection from Munich Airport. A best friend’s advice, “Lufthansa is looking for flight attendants, just apply”, and an acceptance 24 hours after the Frankfurt assessment. Seven years in the cabin, a failed pilot selection at her own airline, and the day her phone finally rang.

A conversation about rejections that don’t decide the end, starting later, and the moment you stop thinking “they probably won’t take me.”
